Rat Control

What is Artemis’ Guarantee?

in over 90% of rat infestations, the issue is resolved with two home or site visits. However, if you have followed our recommendations and your current rat problem persists, we are committed to returning for further visits free of charge.

How do we Deal with Rats?

Visit One: Survey & Treatment

Pre-Treatment Brief: First, we ask you to share your observations: what you have seen and heard.

Property Survey: Our experts carefully inspect your premises, searching for signs of rat nests and movement trails. The survey allows them to pinpoint the problem areas and strategically place poison bait.

Treatment: Utilising top-quality professional-grade poison, we position bait stations in all areas displaying rat activity. Our approach ensures swift, effective, and humane resolution of the issue.

As over a third of rat infestations are sewer-related, we also administer poison in inspection chambers wherever feasible.

We will also cover any safety precautions necessary, particularly if the household has children or pets.

Recommendations: We will advise how the rats may have gained entry and the immediate actions you can take to prevent further occurrences.

Visit Two: Inspection & Report
(approx two weeks later)

Pre-Treatment Brief: Again, we ask for your observations, particularly any changes since our first visit.

Inspection: We thoroughly examine all bait stations to assess the success of the treatment. Should evidence of activity persist, we re-bait the stations and schedule a further visit. If not, we will remove the bait stations.

Report: Once we have resolved your rat issue, we leave you with a comprehensive report detailing the treatment process, recommendations, and photographs if necessary. If we identify the potential benefits of proofing your property to prevent future issues, we include a quote for this additional work.

Why Artemis?

‘Professional’, ‘Knowledgeable’, ‘Punctual’, ‘Courteous’
 – this is how customers describe our service.

David with van

Artemis Pest Services is a small, independent, professional business priding itself on its unique customer service.

Based in Reading, we cover the entire county of Berkshire and cross over into the surrounding counties of Surrey, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire.

When we visit your home, we will not only deal with your immediate pest issue but will seek to find its root cause. In the case of rats, this will be looking for access points and may also require ‘baiting the drains’.

All our treatments are a fixed price and guaranteed. While two home visits are the norm, we will continue the treatment until we have eradicated the pests. And, as part of our engagement, we will always give our professional advice on how to avoid a future infestation.

Rat Facts

“Rats may be unwelcome guests, but they are survivors, thriving where others fear to tread”

What follows are some (hopefully) useful and interesting facts about these great survivors.

  • Rats are social animals and live in hierarchical family groups comprising an alpha male and female along with their offspring. A typical family group is around 4-6 individuals (this can increase quickly given the right environment).
  • A female rat can have six litters per year, with between 5-12 young per litter.
  • They are neophobic, meaning that they have a fear of anything new in their environment. It can take a few days for them to inspect a new object before feeling comfortable with it.
  • Rats are omnivores and eat pretty much anything. However, they will seek out food that they are familiar with and has the highest calorific content.
  • Rats prefer to move along boundaries, making it easier for them to look out for any predators.
  • Their incisors never stop growing, so they must continuously gnaw to keep them from getting too long.
  • Rats will use cavity walls to move around the home and will surface in the attic or anywhere a pipe cuts through an internal wall.
  • Most rats in the UK live in the sewer system, where they have an ample supply of food and water (however disgusting this sounds).
  • It is also a (unfortunate) fact that rats use the sewer system to enter homes. They do this either through a break in the pipe or even directly through a toilet basin.
  • Rats need to drink and prefer to live close to a water source. That could be one of the many streams and rivers running through our county or the garden pond.
  • Rats seek warmth, and in the cooling autumn weather, they will seek a way to get indoors.

It is extremely difficult to prevent rats from entering your property, but one sure way to minimise the risk is to be mindful of any food sources you leave lying around.

  • To a rat, a bird table is akin to an all-you-can-eat buffet. Oh, and that also goes for your neighbour’s. If you have a rat problem, you might want to consider how you continue to feed the birds.
  •  If you keep animals, check all areas around their enclosures for potential food sources. Where possible, store all animal food in a metal container.
  • When garden and food waste decompose in a compost bin, they give off heat and a strong smell. The perfect place for rats to feed and harbour

Also,

  • Rats love decking as it gives them a safe place, away from predators, to nest and raise their young. If you can, block any rat-sized access holes
  • Consider having a sewer blocker fitted. This one-way valve will allow wastewater to flow away from your house but stop anything from travelling in the opposite direction.

Solal Panel Protection

Solar Panel Protection

In addition to pest control, Artemis Pest Services is one of the area’s leading installers of solar panel mesh (‘netting’). Working from ladders, where it is safe to do so, we provide a cost-effective solution to the problems caused by pigeons nesting behind solar panels.

In 2024, Artemis Pest Services installed protective mesh on more than 50 solar panel arrays, including both commercial and residential properties. This achievement translates to securing approximately 400 individual panels and using an impressive 1 km of our specifically designed solar mesh.

Visit our Solar Panel Page to request a quote for securing your solar array.
