Why Proof Solar Panels?

Solar Panel Damage: Nesting pigeons can cause damage to the solar panels through scratches and pecks. These can reduce the efficiency of the panels and may require costly repairs.
Solar Panels Efficiency: The presence of pigeons and their droppings can decrease the panel’s efficiency by blocking sunlight and reducing airflow.
Fire Hazards: Pigeons construct nests using flammable materials (twigs, straw, feathers). These can become a fire hazard if they come into contact with electrical wiring behind the solar panels.
Health Risks: Pigeon droppings can pose health risks to humans, as they can carry harmful bacteria and viruses that can cause diseases like Salmonella, E. coli, and Histoplasmosis. They can also be unsightly and cause unwanted odours.
Roof Damage: Pigeons nesting behind solar panels can damage the roof. With restricted access, repairs can be problematic. Pigeon droppings are also acidic and can, over time, cause corrosion.

Types of Mesh

At Artemis Pest Services, we install two types of solar panel bird-proofing mesh: ‘Solar Guard’ and ‘Mesh with Clips’. Both are constructed from long-lasting galvanised steel with a black PVC coating and are 100% effective against nesting pigeons and other birds.

Mesh with Clips

Our Mesh with Clips is a cost-effective solution suitable for solar panels with a lip. This continuous mesh is placed around the installation’s edge and securely fastened with specially designed clips.

The mesh is 200mm wide, and the hole size is 12mm x 12mm

Solar Guard

Solar Guard not only offers effective pigeon proofing, it also boasts aesthetic advantages with its smaller footprint, making it less visible at ground level. Spiked strips, bonded with a secure black adhesive, run along the edge of each panel. A key feature of Solar Guard is the individual pins, which, when raised, allow easy access to the panel’s underside for servicing and maintenance.

Solar Guard comes in various sizes to precisely fit the side of the panel. The pins are adjusted to meet the roof’s contours.

Whilst Solar Guard provides excellent protection against pigeons, it unsuitable for protecting against small birds, such as starlings.

Solar Mesh FAQ

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on the size of your solar installation and ease of access. Send us photos (including ground-to-roof elevation) via our desktop form or WhatsApp, and we’ll provide a quote within 24 hours. We also offer free site surveys.

How soon can you install mesh?

We can usually schedule installation within a week. However, very wet weather or high winds may occasionally delay work for safety reasons.

Will pigeons return after mesh installation?

No. Our proofing completely blocks pigeons from accessing the area under your panels. However, smaller birds, such as starlings, may still get through Solar Guard, but not our Mesh with Clips system. We’ll recommend the best solution for your specific installation.

Will proofing affect my solar panel output?

No. Proofing allows full airflow and sunlight. In fact, it often improves efficiency by reducing shading from droppings.

Do you need scaffolding?

Usually not. Ladders can be safely used on most installations, which helps keep costs down.

Do you drill into the panels?

No. Our mesh system fastens securely to the panel frame with clips, while Solar Guard is fixed with a permanent adhesive. Neither method affects your solar panel warranty.

How long will the mesh last?

Both Solar Guard and Mesh with Clips are made from galvanised steel with a black PVC coating and designed to last for decades.

Will you clean up existing bird debris?

Yes. We remove nests and debris wherever possible but will avoid areas where the removal might risk damage to cables or the solar installation. We will also clean debris from the gutters under the solar installation.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. All our proofing installations come with a comprehensive guarantee covering both materials and workmanship.

Are there any legal or environmental concerns?

Pigeons are classified as pests and can be removed year-round. While other birds are protected during nesting season (typically March to August), the majority of our solar panel work involves pigeons, so timing is rarely an issue.
